Japanese Restaurant Week Ends Tomorrow!!!

YAM (Yet Another Mave$ave)

I can hardly believe how mouth-watering the pictures and descriptions of the food at these restaurants are . . . Wow!!!  I just heard about this but plan to go to one of these places today!

I would check whether the restaurant you're interested in is open on the weekends if you plan to try one of them today.  I noticed that Hatsuhana is closed today and Hatsuhana Park is closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

Enjoy!!!

chopsticks clipart_449pReminder that Japanese Restaurant Week 2013 in New York City ends on Monday, March 18th, with 35 Japanese restaurants participating with special menus ranging from $12 to $15. This year’s theme celebrates the regional cuisines of Japan,

Japanese Restaurant Week really is two weeks, Mar. 4-18, which gives you more lunch and dinner opportunities to sample a new Japanese restaurant, or return to a favorite.
Many participating restaurants are serving special “ekiben” bento boxes that include local Japanese dishes. Ekiben is Japanese fast food, sold at railway train stations in Japan, with local and regional favorites that vary within Japan’s 21 prefectures.

Participating NYC Japanese Restaurant Week restaurants also are serving full menus beyond ekiben bento boxes. Click here for the list of participating restaurants, which include Sushiden and MEGU in midtown

The two-week long restaurant week winds up with Japan Week in NYC, including a three-day festival in Grand Central Terminal March 19-21, with food, crafts and free Japanese cultural performances and demonstrations, and information about travel to Japan.

Take the NYC subway to Japan in March for Japan Week and Japanese Restaurant Week.

More March Madness and Mirth!!! - Free and Cheap Admission to NYC Museums

YAM (Yet Another Mave$ave)

Happy Beginning of Daylight Savings Time!!

Even though Spring is going to start officially this month, who knows what the weather will be like from day to day?  We've already had significant snowfall and frankly, it has been pretty cold!  So, why not enjoy visiting some museums (a delightful indoor diversion)?

Here's one of many references online that tell you about the many museums in New York that have free admission.  I've been to the National Museum of the American Indian and definitely suggest going to it!  It's not fair from Fraunces Tavern and other historic sites and good places to grab a bite.  If you're interested in a FREE boat ride, you can walk to the Staten Island Ferry or walk a little bit further to take the ferry to Governor's Island!

Enjoy!

March Madness and Mirth!!! - Uptown Dance Academy Dance Classes

YAM (Yet Another Mave$ave)

March is magical!  First of all, tomorrow morning Daylight Savings Time will go into effect!

My daughter and I attended the Uptown Dance Academy Performance of the Black Nutcracker this past Winter and that was definitely a Mave$ave -- the tickets were only $7 per person!!!    It was an updated version of the popular holiday classic showcasing their students dancing to Duke Ellington's Nutcracker Suite. This shortened version, including many modern dance moves is really enjoyed by kids!

I was struck by how much the students seemed to enjoy themselves and imagine that this Dance Academy is inspiring to them.

Vanessa's Revisited with a Rave Review!!

YAM (Yet Another Mave$ave)

This is going to be the happiest Before and After story ever!!  Before we went to Vanessa's we were two hungry souls!  But, After, we were thrilled beyond compare!!  We'd found a fantastic new place to eat, we were stuffed to the gills and we'd had a wonderful adventure!!

Oh, would you like to know what we ate?  Are you wondering how much it cost?  That's reasonable!  We ordered the delicious duck sesame pancake sandwich (which only costs $2.50) and an order of shrimp dumplings (8 for $5) and an order of special lamb dumplings for only about $4.  Everything was simply scrumptious!

We were able to sit down at a table as soon as we arrived.  It was a fairly large round table so we ended up having three different groups of other people sitting with us though our meal but, hey, we're in New York and there are millions of people on this island!  We enjoyed the two friendly groups that chatted us up gleefully as much as the quiet couple in between them who were clearly more concerned about eating their food and chatting intermittently with each other.

We are definitely ready to return as soon as possible!  Our food was so good that we had to order bok choy, pork buns and a couple more delectable duck sandwiches to bring home for the rest of the family!

The Parking Ticket That Was Not!!

YAM (Yet Another Mave$ave)!!!

If you've been driving around New York City you may have found that Meter Personnel can be fairly diligent about giving parking tickets.  I've read articles about some of these employees waiting for the time to expire on meters (those that are still found around the City).  When I've watched and read news stories about this, I've been heartened to hear that drivers are supposed to be given a 5 minute grace period to buy the ticket to display in their windshields.

I learned something very interesting yesterday.  As my daughter and I walked to buy the ticket to place on our windshield, something told me to turn around to look at my car.  Thank you, Parking Angel!!  It just so happened that a meter maid had her pad poised to write me a ticket when I let her know we were walking to get the ticket.  She informed me that when you're en route to the Muni Meter to buy a ticket, you should put your blinkers on.

Well, I'm here to share that info with you because I wasn't aware of this and I have a feeling  Parking Angels are very busy these days!!  So, just in case your Parking Angel doesn't alert you like mine did, it sounds like you should put your blinkers on while in transit to the Muni Meter to purchase your ticket.

HPP!!! (Happy Parking, People!!!)

Vanessa's Dumpling House

YAM (Yet Another Mave$ave)

It's that time of day on a Saturday when we are generally ravenous!  Because it's the weekend we don't have to adhere to the regular weekday routine.  Therefore, like many Saturdays we've been out and about and snacking a bit here and there.  But, it's time for a real meal!!  So, my daughter and I are ready to try out this restaurant!  The two of us were driving around Chinatown earlier today and would have gladly stopped anywhere for a nice lunch (even though it was about 10:15 this morning) but we couldn't find any parking.  However, driving along Mott Street made me think about how many times I've been told about this place!!  Just recently, it was recommended again and I say tonight is the night to try it out!!

If I was excited about eating at this restaurant before going online, I'm somehow even more enthusiastic now after reading reviews of it on Yelp!  There were so many positive reviews!!

Now, I can hardly wait!!
